Dissertation guidance

Hi,

I'm looking for some help with a dissertation, the topic itself is loosely based around the Sri Lankan Civil war/human rights and governance during and after the war.

The issue I'm having is narrowing this down to become something I can turn into a dissertation and even how to start this piece of work.

If anyone could help that would be great,

thank you

Hi Sarah,I understand your question a dissertation can be an overwhelming piece of work , I believe you should dissect the points of the topic into manageable parts for example examine and define what is meant by human rights, then direct  this analysis to the Sri Lankan war you could then look at the human rights abuses done by the Tamil Tigers and government forces and how this breached the Geneva convention . The Governance of Sri Lanka during after the war can closely be intertwined with Human Rights abuses conducted in the Sri Lankan war. This topic is vast I would be more than happy to meet with you via Tutor Hub if you have any further questions and I can provide to you all the academic guidance that you may need.

Hi,Perhaps you could concentrate on a certain group (e.g. a certain village, women, higher castes etc.). You could also narrow it down to a certain type of rights (e.g. free speech). Hope I have been of help!Atanas

Hi Sarah,I would suggest choosing a specific area for study that is interest for you - always easier write about something that interests you. An example could be the role played by Non Governmental Organisation during the Sri Lankan Civil War.The next step is to find a topic within the subject area that would make for a good discussion e.g. Did International NGOs lessen or worsen the conflict through actions of humanitarian relief? or Did NGO's humanitarian medical aid undermine the Sri Lankan government's responsibility for the medical of their own citizenry during the civil war? I would avoid choosing a subject area where there has been little previous research - you don't need something original, rather something that you can discuss drawing on conflicting viewpoints. Choosing the right dissertation topic is certainly very important. I'd be happy to help further though maybe I am a little late!
