Hi Maahir,In relation to your pertaining question , Hyphens' main purpose is to glue words together. They notify the reader that two or more elements in a sentence are linked. Although there are rules and customs governing hyphens, there are also situations when writers must decide whether to add them for clarity. Generally, hyphenate two or more words when they come before a noun they modify and act as a single idea. This is called a compound adjective.Examples:an off-campus apartmentstate-of-the-art designWhen a compound adjective follows a noun, a hyphen may or may not be necessary.Example: The apartment is off campus.I hope this explanation is helpful, if you have any further questions please don t hesitate to ask. Hi Maahir, It looks like you've been given some great advice by Ali P. Here's a little bit more information:A hyphen (-) is the punctuation
mark used to link two or more words together. The most common use of the hyphen
is to create hyphenated compound words & phrases. The hyphen prevents confusion
and makes sentences clearer and easier to read.Examples:Hyphenated compound
words- anti-sickness- one-way - well-known - seventy-two- user-friendly - full-timeHyphenated
phrases:- up-to-date - face-to-face- one-to-oneThe rules for using the
hyphen to create compound words/phrases are under debate - different
dictionaries take different approaches.Try to follow the two basic principles
below:1. Only
use hyphens if it aids clarity
2. Try to be consistent in your usage Note: You should not hyphenate to join the words after a noun.Example 1:In this sentence a hyphen is
required: This is a one-way street. In this sentence a hyphen
is not required: The street only
went one way.Example 2:In
this sentence a hyphen is required: The
well-known dancer gave a fantastic performance.
In this sentence a hyphen is not
required: The lead dancer was well
known. Note: A
hyphen never has spaces on either side. Correct: well-known
Incorrect: well - knownHope this helps. :)
