In which type of environment does 'expansion and contraction' weathering mainly occur?

Answers
It can happen in environments where there is: frost, thermal expansion, transitioning between wet and dry and decay caused by salt. Water, in all of its forms (rain, fog, raising ground moisture, sea etc) is the most important element in this process.

So what types of environment would you see expansion and contraction? Well, how about mountains (frost), thermal expansion (deserts), wet and dry (tropical) and salt (the sea).
