Is an Comp Sci MSc worthwhile if I already have 20 years experience?
I've never been formally trained, always self taught, and I sometimes feel I should go back to formal education so round out my knowledge. Is it proven to be financially worth the time and tuition fees in the long run?

In my experience, a good education may open a few doors for you when you are looking for a job, but it's you as a person that determines what you do and how much you earn. Having a good qualification is no guarantee of future financial riches. It's not possible to say whether or not it would pay for itself.

Would be interested in the views of others.

Education in its purest form increases your understanding and enriches your mind. In my opinion, this more important than the financial rewards.

I think it depends on what you want the MSc for. If you're a programmer with plenty of experience, I can't really see what it would give you. There is the other argument, which says that it's for your own sense of achievement .. plus you may find that people treat you differently, knowing that you are 'qualified'..

The trouble with putting forward the view that education should be pursued for its own sake, the possibility of a "good" job being a by product, is that it identifies one as being old, brought up at a time when such views were prevalent. I've no idea how old jon or er are, but if significantly younger than me then I would be enormously encouraged.

I would say probably not - I have an equivalent qualification, but when looking for jobs it's the number of years programming in the particular language that is often the key requirement. You could look into OU courses which would give you the opportunity to try an MSc level course without committing to the full time or cost of the MSc.
