Scientists estimate that the number of axolotis used to be around 1,500 per square mile in certain areas, but has reduced to just 25. This is the number of wild axolotls, however, there are large numbers of axolotls in captivity around the world. Reasons for the decline in numbers include: Water pollution, habitat destruction, they are defenseless and easy prey for other species.
