There are a series of factors, e.g. the sun (and solar activity) and the earth's orbit and volcanic eruptions. Mankind also have an impact - think actions that lead to greenhouse gases and deforestation for example - although for the purposes of what you are being asked to do, its possible that human activity is excluded.
