The Del operator
i'm going through some tricky vector product arrangements and rearrangements. some involve expressions like phi del (i mean the symbol phi followed by the operator del) - no dot or cross product involved. what exactly does this mean? is it the same as del phi? simply the gradient of phi? i can't find any websits which clarify this

Hi Hen,I cannot tell for sure without seeing the work, but I would assume that phi is a scalar functionphi: R^n -> Rand hence phi del = (phi*d/dx_1 , phi*d/dx_2, phi*d/x_3, ...)I hope that clarifies?
