I'm going to try and explain it in word terms.Say you know an angle, x degrees, in a right-angled triangle (x cannot be the right angle itself!). SOHCAHTOA only applies to right-angled triangles.If you do sin(x), the result is equal to the length of the side opposite the angle x divided by the length of the side adjacent to the angle. (note that the hypotenuse, the longest side, is never the adjacent or the opposite).If you do cos(x), the result is equal to the length of the adjacent side divided by the length of the hypotenuse.tan(x) is the same as the length of the opposite side divided by the length of the adjacent side.A good mnemonic for this is Some Old Hag Cracked All Her Teeth On Apples.Therefore, using these useful equations you should be able to work out the length of the hypotenuse, adjacent or opposite sides or the angle (by inversing the trigonometric functions once you've found sinx/cosx/tanx), given two of these pieces of information).Hope this helps!
