water

how many degrees of freedom does water have

Answers
Any molecule (including water) has 3n degrees of freedom, where n is the number of atoms in the molecule. However, how many of these are active depends on the conditions. For example: In frozen water molecules have only 6 degrees of freedom.

I should add that 3 degrees of freedom for any molecule are translational (movement of the molecules centre of mass along x,y, and z axis). For a non linear polyatomic molecule like water there are 3 rotational degrees of freedom, and 3n-6 vibrational degrees of freedom.
