Another art question from the archives - hopefully someone is interested still!There is a variety of different interpretations about what art formula is.The most commonplace usage of this term would be to describe work that is formulaic, in that an artist has invented a set of principles which produce an outcome that the artist is happy with. The criticism of this approach is that once a formula is invented, the artist can produce large quantities of work and that something of the elusive, mysterious, inexplicable and individual nature of art is lost with it.Its arguable that all artists come up with principles by which to produce artworks and that by extension, all are formulaic. Although this is not an opinion of mine!The above spin painting by Damien Hirst is a good example - put paint on, spin, and hey presto! -art. He has even run workshops where you can make them yourself, like following instructions - anyone can do it.
