What is shakespeare's treatment of Villainy in Macbeth?

The question is asking about how Shakespeare treats villainy as a theme. What characteristics and actions are presented as villainous? Who are the villains of the play - and why would you call them villains?

Two of the most famous villains of English literature appear in this play: Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth. The over arching ambition of Macbeth to become King, with the support of his wife, is a classic example of treachery and villainy. He consorts with witches, murders and his wife subsequently loses her mind.

When a question asks you to comment on the "treatment" of villainy, you need to think of how the author portrays acts of villainy, the consequences of those actions, the motives behind their actions and the language that Shakespeare uses to describe those acts. You have to be a little like a journalist: how, why, what and where are good starting points. The language that Shakespeare uses is generally evocative and colourful - think how it influences your view of the character and their actions.
