Not what is shown by the media, but how it is shown. The way it is shown can lead to different interpretations from viewers.

If violence is shown as being cool for example, it might encourage other people to do the same and possibly risk their lives.

If violence is glamorised in some way, it might desensitise people from its full horror, and could encourage copycat behaviour.

Violence is often shown in the media to be very prevalent, while in real life there is not that much violence. The media's representation is one of the reasons why the fear of crime is much higher than the actual level of crime.

Some research has suggested that violence shown in the media could cause desensitisation to the audience, they may not be as affected as other audiences who do not watch/take part in any violent forms of media
