Who is the Holy Spirit?

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Answers
I would say this is a huge question, which I should think some people have written very long books about! But my answer would be that for the Christian religion 'God' is made up of 3 beings - the Father (God, who created the world), the Son (Jesus) and then the Holy Spirit, which Jesus left to his followers as a gift after he had gone up back to Heaven. The Holy Spirit isn't something/someone you can touch or see, but it shows itself in - eg people having the power to do things they thought they couldn't , for instance heal someone or forgive someone. The Holy Spirit is part of God - ie part of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). I know this all sounds rather 'woolly' but that would be my understanding of what the Holy Spirit is.

I once asked a jewish Rabbi this very question - his reply was the Holy spirit is the One-God - in a different state, like water is the same as ice, but in a different state. The topic is not clear and is admittedly more in the secret or esotoric regions of religion - however, i do remember that the Holy Spirit was meant to dwell ontop of the Ark of the Covenant that once sat in the Temple of Solomon.

The 'Spirit of God' is His power, by which He sustains creation, is everywhere present, and reveals and fulfils His will. 'And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.'(Genesis 1:2) ;

'The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.' (Job 33:4) (See also Psalm 104:30: Micah 3:8) The Holy Spirit is the same power of God, directed to fulfil any special purpose, as in His redeeming work.Thus by the Holy Spirit God's revelation was made through the prophets: by the Holy Spirit Jesus was begotten and enabled to do his mighty works and speak the Father's words: by it the apostles were guided into all truth and were able to attest their message by wonderful works. Special gifts of the Holy Spirit were granted in the early church, and by the Holy Spirit God dwelt among believers. 'For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.' (2Peter 1:21) 'And John bare record,saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Spirit.'; (John 1:32) 'Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?' (1 Corinthians 6:19) ....

Hi Emma, so I have a pretty short explanation. So basically Jesus told his disciples he was leaving after the Resurrection. They were all upset about this but Jesus also told them he would be sending a spirit down to earth for them. When Jesus had ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit came down by tongues of fire. When the tongues of fire got down to earth say landed on the disciples heads, and they were able to speak in different languages and preach the gospel . So the Holy Spirit is the spirit that Jesus sent down after he ascended into heaven for all of us. And he will be here until Jesus comes back. Sorry Iā€™m a couple years late on this.
