Why is the study of history such a useful discipline?

Answers
Good question. I think that it gives you an excellent insight into the reasons why things are they way they are today. It also helps you understand how difficult change has been and the larger than life characters that have made it happen.

It's interesting that this question was raised at this time... Reforms are taking place in history, but not without controversy. www.guardian.co.uk…history-curriculum

Yes, I think the key here is that History encourages analytical and skeptical thinking. Now, that doesn't suit everybody, does it?

It is important to learn from the past, that's what our history teacher said.

So it doesn't happen again- e.g. The Holocaust would be awful if it ever happened again.

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it... in other words, history points lessons and warnings for both the present and the future. Its study also hones your cognitive skills: memory, understanding, critical thinking, interpretative ability and all round literacy. The study of the history of a subject, technology, society or activity also provides essential deep insight into its current status or condition. Finally, history students have to be able to write. Good writing is crucial and history writing exercises your vocabulary, discursive skills, grammatical accuracy and capacity to formulate a clear and graspable argument. I hope this helps.

History allows people to not only understand how things happen, but also why. For example, studying the background of a historical figure such as a politician allows you to understand their actions better - how the past has helped to shape the future! It also helps to teach you to develop arguments, by trying to establish what was the most important factor that led to a historical event :)

Good point Alexandrag. History does attempt to gain an insight into the actions of individuals and aims to re-assess accepted causes of events.
