My interest in working in the childcare sector was sparked during my A-level psychology studies. I came across and studied child development theories which explained children’s behaviours and development. The first theory that caught my attention was Piaget’s theory of developmental stages. This intrigued me to pursue a career in teaching.

I recently gained my QTS qualification from Newman University. I also hold a HND in working with children and families and a HNC early years professional status. Given the fact that to gain my HNC I had to gain up to 500 hours of experience in an early years focused placement means that I have a large amount of experience in the early years and a very sound knowledge of the early years foundation stage curriculum. In the build up to my QTS qualification I secured myself a placement period in a ‘outstanding’ graded primary school where I was placed in year 1 and worked across the 3 forms of year 1. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work alongside three different year 1 teachers and therefore, 90 children. Gaining advice and opportunity from all three teachers in planning, communication with the class and staff, methods, approaches and assessments. I was regularly given the opportunity to work with small groups of children either to monitor and deliver assessments, deliver small sessions, scaffold during guided reading or scaffold and guide the children as they worked. In my QTS year for my final placement i was fortunate enough to be placed in a year 5 classroom alongside an ‘outstanding’ teacher. This is where I gained much of my independence as a teacher and my ‘strong’ teacher presence. I am an at an advantage to have been given the opportunity to work with an ‘outstanding school’ and an ‘outstanding’ class teacher in my placements as I have observed and absorbed as much knowledge as I can from my experiences.

Over the years I have developed excellent oral and written communication skills which help me to communicate my lessons, planning ideas and feedback to the children. In all my placements I have worked collaboratively and co-operatively with others on a regular basis to inform and improve my own professional development. I welcome criticism from others around me and consistently ask for lesson evaluations from children and adults so that I can develop myself as a teacher.

As a teacher I feel I can bond quickly with the children, which allows me to build a ‘good rapport’ with them instantly. The ability to learn their names and identify the children by their personalities quickly is a strength. I feel this is important because It allows me to identify what kind of learner or ability the child is, this informs the planning and assessments. I am confident enough to say that my practice with children has grown over the years. I have gained the understanding of how to handle and educate children in a friendly manner. Being humble and kind, yet assertive.
