Bonjour! I graduated from Keble College, Oxford in 2016 with First-class honours in French & Linguistics (having earned a Double Distinction and the best results in my College during the Preliminary Examinations), and am willing and eager to offer help to students of French from school age up to and including undergraduate level; I am also able to tutor students ab initio, introducing them to a language they've never studied before. My academic specialisms include the historical development of the French language from Latin, Classical French poetics, and 16th-century Neoclassical French tragedy, but I have had a broad enough education to be of help in most areas pertaining to the French language.
After Oxford, I stayed on for another year in order to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Education, training at Saint Birinus' School, Didcot and King Alfred's Academy, Wantage, before teaching for a term at Repton, a public school in Derbyshire. In the course of my degree, I also spent a year working through the British Council as an English Language Assistant at the Lycée Jean-Antoine Chaptal, Quimper, Brittany, undertaking some joint work with the Assistant at the Lycée Auguste Brizeux, also of Quimper. While still at school, I spent two weeks working through the charity Help Lanka at Lumbini College, Gampaha, Sri Lanka as an English assistant, working with peers and with Sri Lankan colleagues to help vary the usual English curriculum; on returning, I spent my free time during my final year at school volunteering in the school's SEN department, helping with English and Maths lessons as required, and mentoring a younger pupil through the Catch Up Literacy programme. As I undertake a part-time Master's degree in Translation Studies, I look forward to applying this experience to the one-on-one teaching environment I have long sought, and to continuing to open up the beauties of the French language.
As a tutor, my job depends entirely on your requirements. If it's what you want, I can drill grammar from the present tense of avoir to the imperfect subjunctive of zézayer; I can help brush up basic vocabulary and structures; or I can simply offer an attentive ear for informal conversation with gentle correction. I have a great appreciation for the traditional methods of teaching grammar, which are not always seen in modern schools, all without neglecting the more useful elements of more modern trends. No two tutees will be the same, and so neither will two different tutoring sessions - what they'll have in common is academic rigour combined with a good-humoured approach to the language.
