I recently graduated from University of Bristol with a 2:1 in a BA English and Philosophy degree. I have always been very driven towards working with children and students; teaching especially. Since graduating from Bristol University, I have secured a place on a PGCE Schools Direct course teaching English at Secondary School. I am very passionate about English and education and I would love to be able to give extra help in order for students to succeed. I have a varied education, studying English Literature, Maths and History of Art at A Level, then taking up Philosophy as a joint honours with English at University. This demonstrates my adaptability and understanding of different subjects, of which I can bring into tutoring and teaching.
I have previously worked as a group tutor in a secondary school in Bristol aiding the teaching of English. I was able to support in classes ranging from Year 7-11, and occasional classes of A Level. I supported in this school weekly, which helped me to get to know and support particular students, and build up their understanding, knowledge and confidence. This experience helped me to understand the benefits of tutoring, individual support and encouragement.
My approach in tutoring would be to fully engage with the student, to focus on their weaknesses and try and build them into strengths. I would begin in the first session by discussing with the student what they think their strengths and weaknesses are in the subject, and then ask them to consider why. This will aid me with an understanding of what areas to focus on with the student. From my previous experience in tutoring in a classroom setting, I witnessed first-hand the difficulties students can have in the classroom if they do not understand what is taught. This can lead to weakened confidence in the student’s ability, something which in tutoring I would aim to strengthen. Tutoring with me will give the student the opportunity to ask the questions they may not feel confident to in class, or questions the teacher doesn’t have time to fully explain. I would aim to go over, in addition, any aspects of homework feedback that they do not fully understand, give them support in preparing homework or essays, whilst also helping them with revision techniques and providing support in their preparation for exams. My desire in tutoring is to provide the individual with the understanding and skills required to excel in a subject they may originally have been struggling with.
