I am currently a supply teacher and have been enrolled with them since January. This has given me an insight into many different schools, their ethos and teaching strategies as well as the opportunity to teach a range of year groups and abilities. I have brought with me a wealth of knowledge from my previous experience and training including: Safeguarding processes and agencies, EAL support and intervention; SEN support, documents and processes; talk for writing training, development and delivery; productive assessment and use of data to support pupil progress, and strategies to support children in achieving greater depth in their learning.

I am a well-suited candidate to tutor your child due to my creative approach to teaching, which ensures I deliver exciting and engaging lessons through cross curricular and child led planning. I also believe in allowing children to grow by directing their own learning with self-assessment and resilience. I share your school ethos that enjoyment within learning leads to success and growth as it not only makes learning memorable, but also encourages and supports children’s individual interests, strengths and needs. As a school you have created a supportive family like atmosphere and a safe learning environment for the children. I am impressed with how your team promote a love for learning through creativity, experience and a ‘can do’ culture. The school has an impressive timetable for extracurricular activities encouraging a healthy lifestyle and supporting children’s interests. Your school has an important relationship with parents and the local community through trips, sporting and other events.

During my current employment and previous placements, I have led many extracurricular activities including: Phonics interventions, Homework clubs, Grammar hammer, Art & Design craft clubs and mindfulness meetings. I have also organised charity events for the school including our children in need ‘wacky hair day’ and bake sales, which were very successful in raising money for such an important charity. I was fortunate to be able to organise yearly trips to enrich our curriculum. As part of our Bear Grylls topic, I arranged for the children to visit Sky High adventures, where they engaged in a Mount Everest exploration experience. This opportunity provided an exciting stimulus for children’s learning across the curriculum. For Leif Erikson topic, I arranged for a Viking to visit us for the day
to teach the children how to barter, battle and believe in the Viking gods; this lead into some very interesting planning for writing. Wild animals took over the classroom during our Kira Salak topic. The children particularly enjoyed the meerkats coming from the zoo to visit us for the day. This provided an exciting context for their learning in science, geography, D & T and literacy.

My ethos for the classroom strongly encourages children to express their ideas and opinions, as I believe it is important for them to guide their own learning. Incorporating peer and self-assessment allows children to think creatively and critically to improve their own work. It is important to create a learning environment that encourages children to ask questions and I support the mantra, ‘It’s ok not to know, but it’s not ok not to try’. I believe children learn best through first-hand experience and by reflecting on their own mistakes. My classroom focuses on bright, interactive, engaging and celebratory working walls. Celebrating the achievements of all children within the classroom, regardless of their ability is important within my classroom. My wall displays feature differentiated challenges (including those to promote those working at greater depth), busy boxes and other supporting resources. I consistently promote high expectations by incorporating tailored and appropriately challenging success criteria into my lessons.

Safeguarding is at the forefront of my professional role, it is crucial to provide a safe environment for pupils. I use CPOMS daily to log any incidents regarding behaviour or any disclosed information. Close communication with the safeguarding officer has ensured that myself and the school keep our children safe and provide them with the best support necessary. I am committed to ensuring full inclusion and equality within the learning environment and I have a track record of successfully teaching children with special education needs (SEN) such as Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) Cerebral Palsy, Asperger’s, Social Emotional or Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD). I also have experience of successfully supporting children who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL). I achieve inclusion through differentiated planning, the successful deployment of teaching assistants and the creative use of a wide range of resources. I successfully differentiate learning opportunities to support all learners, including those working in greater depth and those with SEN, to ensure they enjoy and achieve their learning goals. I continuously refer to targets outlined within children’s Individual Education Plans (IEPs) when planning lessons, setting targets and learning objectives. Working with outside agencies and supporting referrals has also been an important part of my role: I have worked with speech and language therapists, child psychologists and councillors to provide tailored support for the children within my class.

Another strength of my teaching is my ability to effectively use assessment techniques to tailor my lessons and resources to individual children. I strive to ensure my students develop a love for learning and become independent learners that take responsibility for moving their own learning forward stretching themselves further. I endeavour to create sensory, exciting and cross curricular lessons that provide learners with the opportunity for self-reflection. A recent example of my creative approach to teaching was within a literacy lesson as part of our Bear Grylls topic. I wanted the children to produce some creative writing and transformed our classroom into a rainforest. Sounds of the rainforest filled our classroom; children wore blindfolds to focus on the sounds around them and what they sounded like. The children made notes of ideas and sounds in coloured pens and paper. These were displayed later to help with their writing. Next, I asked the children to think of adjectives to describe objects they had listed with encouragement to further challenge themselves with double adjectives. After that,
the children had to explore the classroom that had been displayed with brightly coloured visuals of animals, insects and a rainforest scene. The children discussed through talk partners what they could see, added to their notes and set targets to use adjectives to describe them.
The higher ability table’s target was to create sentences using different sentence openers and double adjectives. We then, as a class, gathered as many sentence openers as we could I modelled with the children’s ideas what was expected within their writing and together we created our success criteria. This was displayed on our working wall for the children to refer to for their creative writing. We started with our opening paragraph to set the scene. The lower ability tables had words mats and sentence starters to help them. The children who required extra support had images and concentrated on creating short sentences for each picture using adjectives and similes with the TA. For the plenary we shared examples of work and the children shared ideas and new vocabulary.

I have accessed a range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities including seminars on Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) and Level 2 Safeguarding. I also attended Commando Joe’s training to ensure I am following the whole school approach which incorporates the RESPECT curriculum. I have also completed training in phonics (KS1 and KS2), Talk for Writing and health and safety courses such as: Epilepsy and Anaphylaxis and Asthma. These courses have enabled me to improve children’s learning and meet the aims of Every Child Matters, particularly ‘Stay Safe’ and ‘Enjoy and Achieve’.

Parental involvement is a key element in a child’s learning, as both parent and teacher need to support the child’s learning together. Arranging parents’ meetings as much as possible allows the child to feel supported and ensure both the learner and parent understand the child’s goals and targets, and that they know what to do to achieve these. I often show parents their child’s outstanding work and the progress they are making as demonstrated by their results or work. I send home photocopies of work with notes to celebrate the children’s achievements, as well as talking to parents before or after school to check on progress and home life.
I would be an asset to your school, contributing greatly to its caring, community and creative ethos. As a highly motivated, skilled and enthusiastic individual, I feel I’m best suited to tutor your child as I bring with me innovative ideas, enthusiasm, patience and a positive attitude.
